Though it doesn’t officially begin until Aug. 8, bikers from across the nation will be headed to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally all this week. It’s a good time to remember to watch for motorcyclists on Wyoming’s highways.
“In east-central Wyoming, Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 85 are major north-south routes for motorcyclists heading to Sturgis from all along the Front Range. Between now and the end of the rally, motorists need to be aware that they’re likely to see more motorcycles on our highways going to and from the event,” said Jeff Goetz, WYDOT District 2 public relations specialist.
In 2010, there were 332 motorcycle crashes in Wyoming (for bikes with engines larger than 150 cc). That’s up from 317 in 2009. Of those 2010 crashes, 30 were fatal and 319 resulted in injury. In Natrona County alone, there were 44 motorcycle crashes resulting in 36 injuries.
