Quiet zone work begins in Lusk
LUSK – Railroad "quiet zone" work will begin Monday, April 29 necessitating the temporary closure of two railroad crossings.
Crews with Habitat Construction will place traffic control devices Monday on West Griffith Road and West Radium Street and will close the North Diamond Street crossing on Tuesday, April 30. Work at the crossing is expected to last until Wednesday, May 8.
On or about May 8 as the Griffith Street crossing work continues, crews will close the crossing at 3rd Avenue, just north of U.S. 20 on the town's east side. It's likely the closures will last through May.
The project involves reworking each crossing to include new curb and gutter, new pavement, signage and the installation of concrete medians in the roadway. The medians are designed to stop traffic from "running" the railroad crossing, going around the crossing gates. At these crossings, passing trains won't sound their horns. Detours will be posted.
