Togwotee Trail highway construction start hinges on snow melt

Date: 05/04/2011

The construction start date for 2011 may possibly be delayed due to a phenomenal amount of snow this season on U.S. 26-287, the Togwotee Trail to Yellowstone, between Dubois and Moran Junction.

Rosie’s Ridge, the final section of the road improvement project, begins 7.83 miles east of Moran Junction and ends about seven miles west of the Fremont-Teton county line (milepost 7.83 to milepost 14.47).
Included in 2011 construction plans for Rosie’s Ridge are:
  • Stabilizing six landslide areas between milepost 9.5 and milepost 11 on the existing highway route along Rosie’s Ridge;
  • Erecting a wildlife arch with dimensions of 126 feet by 42 feet by 27 feet at milepost 10.5, and building about 2,000 feet of fencing to encourage safe wildlife crossing through the underpass;
  • Constructing more retaining walls.

Also scheduled in 2011 is the proposed completion of 1.7 miles of the Togwotee Pass section between mileposts 19.58 and 21.28 on U.S. 26-287.

Togwotee Pass section construction plans include:
  • Completing the snowmobile underpass by Wind River Lake;
  • Construction of additional parking areas.

With a low bid of $22.7 million on the Rosie’s Ridge Section, and $1.29 million on the Rosie’s Ridge Slide Mitigation, Oftedal Construction, Inc. was chosen as prime contractor for both projects. Completion date for the Rosie’s Ridge section is July 31, 2013.

Daytime delays and nighttime closures should be similar to previous years. A schedule will be set when construction is under way. To help keep travelers informed of road closures, there may be a portable dynamic message sign placed on the east end of Jackson. The permanent dynamic message sign in Dubois will be used to inform travelers, and the toll-free hotline (877-WYO-TRAIL) will include construction updates.

Overall progress reports that 29.5 miles of the 38-mile highway corridor have been built. Just 8.5 miles of road construction remains.

Major projects on the Togwotee Pass/Fourmile Meadows section during 2010 included:
  • Three landslide areas stabilized;
  • Retaining walls built;
  • Additional parking areas created;
  • Snowmobile underpass started;
  • Road to Togwotee Mountain Overlook reconstructed.
