Chief Joseph Scenic Highway improvements resume north of Cody

May 30, 2017

Highway improvements are scheduled to resume this week on a $3.84 million highway improvement project north of Cody on WYO 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway).

Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer Todd Frost of Cody said Oftedal Construction Inc., of Casper, will begin stockpiling rock chips for the upcoming chip seal throughout the project area this week.

“Other miscellaneous cleanup work will be ongoing, and traffic will be controlled by flaggers. Delays will be minimal,” Frost said.

Frost said starting the week of June 12 the contractor will begin fog sealing the shoulders of the highway and chip sealing.

“Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and a pilot car. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes on the project during these operations. Work is expected to take up to two weeks to complete, depending on weather,” he said.

When the chip seal is completed, the contractor will complete work on the Pat O'Hara Creek bridge near WYO 120.

“Work consists of deck repair and resurfacing, and work will take approximately one week. Traffic flow will be one lane across the bridge with traffic signals controlling traffic movements during this time,” Frost said.

The Chief Joseph Scenic Highway project is between mileposts 33.20 (the top of Dead Indian Pass) and 46.20 (the intersection of WYO 296 and WYO 120).

Contract complete date is June 30.

The contractor’s scope of work on this project has included shoulder flattening, a 1 1/2-inch pavement overlay, a chip seal, and slide repair in Paint Creek Canyon, with new reinforced fill, the epoxy overlay of the Pat O'Hara Creek bridge, and other work on 13.32 miles of WYO 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway) north of Cody.
