Construction may cause minor traffic delays for motorists in and around Rawlins

May 9, 2016

Motorists will see minor traffic delays in and around Rawlins while crews complete grinding and other minor work on sections of I-80 and in the city starting May 16.

Crews will do grinding work on I-80 near milepost 213 at the Sage Creek Bridge near Rawlins, on I-80 at milepost 214 near Rawlins and at various locations along Spruce Street in Rawlins. On the Thayer Street Bridge in Rawlins, crews will be filling in a crack in the bridge approach slab with epoxy.

The minor work, which is expected to be completed by Aug. 31, is all that remains of a $1.8 million project WYDOT awarded to Simon Contractors previously. Crews completed the bulk of the work during the 2015 construction season.

For the grinding work on I-80 at mileposts 213 and 214, a 14-foot width restriction will be in place. There will be a one-lane closure with a speed limit of 45 mph.

For the work on Spruce Street, there won’t be any width restrictions. During the work, there will be a moving, one-lane closure following the equipment that will be grinding the surface. WYDOT will be setting a speed limit of 20 mph.

On the Thayer Street Bridge, there will be a 12-foot width restriction in place and there will be a one-lane closure with alternating traffic that will be controlled by flaggers. WYDOT also will be setting a speed limit of 20 mph while that work is taking place.

“We institute lane closures and other flagging measures as well as lowering speed limits as a way to keep workers and the traveling public safe in construction zones,” said Steve Sapp, WYDOT engineer.
