Excessive ground frost delays start of North Federal project to March 19 in Riverton

March 5, 2018

Prime contractor S&S Builders, LLC of Gillette and its All-Wyoming construction team have delayed the start of the $13.96 million North Federal Boulevard highway improvement project to Monday, March 19.

"The start of the project is being delayed due to excessive amounts of ground frost because of the very cold weather over the past several months," according to Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer Robert Scheidemantel. "We appreciate everyone's patience. We are anxious for this project to begin, too."

The $13.96 million North Federal Boulevard (US26/WY789) project bid was awarded to S&S Builders, LLC, of Gillette last September.

The project has two phases. The southern phase is scheduled to be built in 2018 — between Washington Avenue and Forest Drive. The northern phase of the project is scheduled for 2019.

Scheidemantel said Monday that S&S Builders will close Washington Avenue on the east side of Federal Boulevard when the project begins. "This closure will be necessary as the contractor will begin removing asphalt and concrete in this location on Monday, March 19, weather permitting."

By contract, S&S Builders is required to maintain two-way traffic at all times during construction. The contractor may close access to landowners and businesses only with permission of the landowner, business owner, and WYDOT.

Weekly project progress meetings have been rescheduled and will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22, in Riverton City Hall. Each public meeting will include time for public comments and questions.
