Fremont County students participating in 'Buckle Up' efforts in area schools

Students from Fremont County high schools are asking everyone, including students, to buckle their seat belts.

Banners with photographs of students in sports and activities uniforms, such as basketball, track and field, wrestling, marching band and other school activities, are part of the new seat-belt safety campaign.

Through Oct. 1, six people had died in Fremont County traffic crashes in 2019. Five of the six people who died through Oct. 1 in Fremont County traffic fatalities were not wearing their seat belts.

"It's a simple decision every time you climb behind the wheel, or when you're a passenger, front seat or back seat. Buckle up!" said Cody Beers, Wyoming Department of Transportation public relations specialist in Riverton. "This campaign is aimed at our young people, but it applies to all drivers. For many of us, the single-most dangerous thing we will do on any given day is climbing in a vehicle and driving somewhere."

"Save your own life, front seat or back seat, buckle up!" Beers said. "This year's fatality total in Fremont County is unacceptable, and mostly preventable."

The high school seat belt campaign is paid for with federal highway safety funds.
