INTERSTATE 80 WESTBOUND FROM LARAMIE NOW OPEN - REDUCED SPEED LIMIT IN EFFECT

April 21, 2015
Interstate 80 in southeast Wyoming fully reopened to traffic late Tuesday afternoon, after being closed since Monday morning's multi-vehicle crash near the Quealy Dome Interchange, about 20 miles west of Laramie.

The crash, which occurred about 8 a.m. Monday, involved close to 60 vehicles, a majority of them large tractor-trailer combinations. The event resulted in two fatalities and at least 16 injuries.

Several of the crashed vehicles were engulfed in fire, which slowed the emergency response and process of removing wrecked vehicles. The fire damaged a section of pavement, which required emergency repairs before the roadway could be reopened.

A reduced speed limit of 65 mph is in force through the crash site, and travelers should be aware that some pieces of wreckage remain adjacent to the roadway. In addition, workers will still be present on or along the roadway Tuesday evening and again on Wednesday.

The initial closure which began Monday morning included I-80 in both directions of travel between Sinclair and Laramie. The eastbound lanes reopened late Monday, while westbound traffic was rerouted along US 30-287 through Rock River and Medicine Bow.
