Motorists will see detours on US 85 southbound ramp to I-25

May 13, 2016

Traffic using the US 85 southbound ramp to access I-25 north and south near Cheyenne will be detoured starting Monday, May 16 so crews can do concrete slab replacement.

Motorists will be detoured onto Yellowstone Road (WYO 219) southbound to the Iron Mountain intersection. Traffic will then head west onto Iron Mountain Road (WYO 211) to I-25.

The detour will be in place for about two weeks while crews from Simon Contractors and Subsidiaries of Cheyenne tear out the old concrete and put in new concrete on the ramp, said Wayne Shenefelt, resident engineer with the Wyoming Department of Transportation in Cheyenne.

“They’re going to be jackhammering out the old concrete and getting it ready for the new concrete,” he said. “Once the new concrete is poured, we have to wait several days for it to cure.”

The work is part of a $6.9 million project the Wyoming Transportation Commission awarded to Simon Contractors in December 2015 that includes improvements to 7.6 miles of I-25 north of the Iron Mountain Interchange north of Cheyenne. Besides the concrete slab work, Simon Contractors will be milling off deteriorating pavement and replacing it with a new layer of pavement and rehabilitating nine bridges. The contract completion date for the project is Oct. 31.
