Work begins on WYO 130 project southeast of Saratoga

February 9, 2012

Work has begun on a detour around the temporary bridge spanning a section of WYO 130 washed out by flash flooding on Brush Creek about 22 miles southeast of Saratoga.

Work on the detour downstream from the temporary bridge is not expected to affect movement of alternating one-way traffic over the bridge, which has been in use on the highway since July 23.

Once the detour is completed, traffic will be diverted onto it so the bridge can be dismantled and new concrete culvert installed. The detour will handle alternating one-way traffic controlled by a temporary traffic signal.

Gillette’s S&S Builders submitted the low bid of $829,000 to install the new larger drainage culvert, which is expected to be in place by April 15 to handle spring runoff. Once the culvert is installed, the highway will resume handling normal two-way traffic on temporary surfacing. Additional paving and a chip seal will follow by Aug. 31.

A temporary Web camera WYDOT installed to monitor the site can be viewed at www.wyoroad.info/highway/webcameras/WYO130RM55/WYO130RM55.html.

The flash flooding on July 19 eroded a trench about 25 feet wide and nine feet deep across the highway, resulting in the deaths of four members of a Colorado family whose vehicle was washed away by the torrent at about 1:30 a.m.
