Scheduling a CDL Test

Written tests do not need to be scheduled ahead of time; however, you may have to wait for an available ELO to test on if the driver exam office is exceptionally busy. If you fail a written test, you may take it a second time in one day.

Driving Skills tests MUST be scheduled and paid for in advance.

  1. Once you have completed and passed any required written testing, you should schedule your driving skills test with the driver exam office.
  2. That same office will be notified of your appointment date in about 1 week. You should plan to call the driver exam office on the Wednesday afternoon of the following week to be given your appointment date.
  3. When you schedule your skills test, the examiner will have you complete and sign form [FSCDL104] which explains the requirements and procedures you must follow for CDL skills testing.
  4. Your actual appointment date for the test is generally 2 weeks after you have asked to be scheduled and paid the required $40 fee.

You must provide your own vehicle for the skills test:

  • Your vehicle cannot be "loaded."
  • Your vehicle cannot be "placarded."
  • Your vehicle must be of the proper type for the class of license you are applying for. For example, if you are testing for a Class "A" license with an air brakes endorsement, the vehicle must be a Class "A" vehicle with air brakes.
