Roundabouts

The first roundabouts on the state highway system opened in 2010 at the High Plains Interchange on I-25 south of Cheyenne. Roundabouts will be included in the reconstruction of the Vandehei Interchange on I-25 in north Cheyenne this summer, and the junction of US 26-89 and US 189-191 at Hoback Junction expected to be done by the Oct. 31, 2012.

Roundabouts are a safer, more cost-effective way to build some intersections. The National Cooperative Highway Research Program found converting intersections to roundabouts led to a 35 percent drop in crashes and a 76 percent drop in fatal or serious injury crashes.

By keeping traffic moving and requiring fewer stops and accelerations than conventional intersections, roundabouts reduce delays and congestion, resulting in drops in fuel consumption and emissions.

This short video shows how to safely approach and drive through a roundabout.
