WYO 70, US 14A passes closed for winter

November 24, 2014

WYO 70 over Battle Pass and U.S. 14A between Burgess Junction and Lovell were closed for the winter Monday.

Blowing snow and poor visibility forced the closure of WYO 70 over Battle Pass between Encampment and Baggs. Hunters and hikers are encouraged to leave the area as soon as they can as road conditions will continue to deteriorate.

Similar conditions forced the closure of a 22-mile section of US 14A. The road closure gates are located at Burgess Junction just east of milepost 98, and on the Lovell side of the mountain near milepost 76.

WYDOT seasonally closes the mountain road in the Big Horn Mountains of north-central Wyoming at the end of the fall hunting season, after which heavy snows and relatively light traffic make maintenance of the mountain portion of US 14A impractical.

During the time the road is closed, motorists can use US 14 via Granite Pass and Greybull as an alternative route from Sheridan to Lovell.

Last week, WYDOT closed the portion of WYO 130 over the Snowy Range between Laramie and Saratoga for the winter.

Westbound travelers will encounter the closure at the Green Rock Picnic Area near milepost 36, about 8 miles above Centennial. For eastbound travel, the closure begins near milepost 48 above Ryan Park.
