Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Your License
- How do I get my Class M (Motorcycle) license?
There are two paths in Wyoming:
- WYDOT Basic Rider Course (Recommended): If you are 15+, completing this course waives all Class M testing requirements. Just present your completion card to Wyoming Driver Services within two years.
- Testing at the DMV: Contact your local Driver Services office to schedule the written and skills tests directly with an examiner.
Registration & Cost
- How do I register for a class?
Registration opens in April for classes running from May through October.
- Visit the WYDOT Motorcycle Safety Page.
- Click "Class Registration" on the right side.
- Select your class at the bottom of the page and click "Register Me."
- Enter your info and submit full payment to secure your seat.
- Do you accept walk-ins?
NO. We do not accept walk-ins. Both the online eCourse and full payment are required prior to the start of the class.
- How much does it cost?
- Wyoming Residents: $50 (plus service fee)
- Out-of-State Residents: $150 (plus service fee)
- Is payment due at the time of registration?
Yes. Payment is required at the time of signup to secure your seat. Seats are not held without a complete payment.
- What payment methods are accepted?
Online registration requires a credit or debit card. No personal checks, money order or cash are accepted.
- What if the class I want is full?
If the "Register Me" link isn't visible, the class is full. You may join the Wait List. If a seat opens, you will be notified via email on a first-come, first-served basis.
Class Requirements & Gear
- What does the class consist of?
The BRC includes a mandatory 5-hour self-guided online eCourse (emailed 14 days prior to class) and 11 hours of on-cycle training over two days.
- What are the requirements for students under 18?
Participants must be at least 15 years old. A parent or guardian must sign a waiver in front of the instructor at the start of the first session. The waiver can be signed in advance if it is notarized.
- What do I need to wear? (Required Gear)
You will not be allowed to ride (and will forfeit your payment) without the following:
-
- Helmet: U.S. DOT Certified (loaners are provided if needed).
- Eye Protection: Face shield, goggles, or glasses/sunglasses.
- Gloves: Full-fingered (leather preferred).
- Top: Long-sleeved shirt or jacket (to the wrist). NO exposed skin.
- Bottoms: Long, full-length, abrasion-resistant pants (e.g., denim) that completely cover the legs down to the riding boots. NO sweatpants, spandex, or leggings. NO exposed skin.
- Footwear: Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots.
- Are bikes provided?
Yes. We provide various sizes and styles. They are first-come, first-served, so arrive early for the best selection. We cannot guarantee a specific bike size, brand, or style.
Attendance & Policies
- What time is class?
Class starts promptly at 8:00 AM. You must arrive no later than 7:45 AM (15 minutes early) for check-in. Arriving at 8:00 AM or later is considered a late arrival and will result in immediate dismissal from the class without a refund.
- Is there a lunch break?
Yes, a 45-minute break. The timing depends on class progress. Important: If you are late returning from lunch, you will be dismissed and must re-register and pay again to retake the entire class.
- What is the Refund & Cancellation Policy?
- Full Refund: Written request sent 14+ days before class.
- Conditional Refund (14–7 Days): If you cancel between 14 and 7 days before class, a refund is only issued if we can fill your seat. If your seat cannot be filled, student will be notified and no refund will be issued.
- No Refund: Cancellations within 7 days of start date, no-shows (regardless of reason), late arrivals, course failure, or dismissals of any kind (e.g., improper gear, safety concerns).
- Rescheduling or Dropping Class: Email dot.motorcyclesafety@wyo.gov. If you are rescheduling due to a "No Refund" reason, you must pay for a new class.
Inclement Weather Policy
- What about weather?
Wyoming weather is unpredictable, and classes run rain or shine.
- Be Prepared: Bring rain gear or extra layers. Riding in the rain is part of the learning experience.
- Safety Pauses: In severe weather (lightning/extreme winds), instructors may pause the session until it is safe to resume.
- Cancellations: These are rare and decided on-site by the instructor. If a session is cancelled for safety, students will be refunded or rescheduled at no additional cost.
Out-of-State Resident
- Can out-of-state residents take the course?
Yes, though it is recommended to check with your home state’s DMV first to ensure they accept the Wyoming MSF curriculum for licensing before signing up as not all states accept Wyoming MSF curriculum.
- Note for Colorado Residents: You cannot attend this course for licensing purposes. Colorado law requires that you complete MOST training specifically within the state of Colorado to be eligible for a motorcycle class endorsement.
Replacement Completion Card
- How do I replace my lost completion card?
We do not issue duplicate completion cards. However, if you completed the course within the last two years, we can provide an official Confirmation of Course Completion letter for the DMV. Email dot.motorcyclesafety@wyo.gov with your full name and approximate class date. If it has been over two years, you must retake the course.
