Arp Elementary School - The Big Event - February 2026
Arp Elementary School - February 2026

On February 19, 2026 WYDOT Local Programs, within the Office of Local Government Coordination, was able to participate in Arp Elementary School's "Big Event". Attending this event were various community stakeholders such as the Fire Department and the Forestry Service, aiming to teach the elementary school students about a variety of various professions and programs throughout the state. WYDOT Local Programs spoke to all Pre-K through 2nd grade students at Arp Elementary School in Cheyenne, WY.

The students were spoken to about the importance of bike/pedestrian safety, proper use of hand signals when operating a bicycle, proper use of reflective material, and how to properly fit a bike helmet. Once these discussions were had each student was fitted for and given a bike helmet, bike reflector, bike safety pamphlet, and safety-incetive stickers to decorate their helmets with. These helmets were puchased through the WYDOT Transportation Alternatives Incentive Program (TAIP), which aims to promote bicycle safety to school-age children in the State of Wyoming.

TAIP aims to implement a comprehensive statewide initiative that enhances bicycle safety, traffic education, and school safety. This program aligns with federal and state transportation goals by promoting sustainable and safer transportation alternatives. This office participates in this initiative by attending school-sponsored or town/city-sponsored events where we have the pleasure to hand out helmets, refelctors, and other safety-incentive items to the students and youth of our Wyoming communities.
