US 14A opens

May 22, 2014

A 22-mile section of US 14A in the Big Horn Mountains reopened for the summer season Thursday.

Motorists are cautioned that winter conditions can still occur on the highway, which is lined with snowbanks several feet high and still relatively narrow. Most side roads leading to and from the highway are still blocked.

WYDOT closes this 22-mile stretch of scenic mountain road annually in late November at the conclusion of the fall hunting season when relatively low traffic, combined with deep snow accumulations, render plowing operations impractical. Most years it is reopened in time for Memorial Day weekend.
