Wyoming law requires the license plate design to change every eight years, and the new design to be readily distinguishable from the previous design. All designs are required to include the bucking horse logo.

A new design with Lower Green River Lake and Squaretop Mountain in the background will be issued in 2017, but drivers who pay for two year's of registration at a time will begin getting the new design as early as February of 2016.

Applications for specialty plates with the new design will be available in fall 2016.

Also new for the 2017 plates will be a "T" added to truck plates, and a "C" to commercial vehicle plates, to distinguish those vehicles from standard passenger vehicles with the same number.

The new University of Wyoming plates will change to a gold background with brown numbers.
