Wagonhound and Fort Steele rest areas closed on I-80

May 12, 2016

Two rest areas along I-80 between Rawlins and Laramie are closed for repairs.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation closed the Wagonhound rest area on Thursday due to structural issues. The agency doesn’t have a time frame as to when that rest area will reopen.

WYDOT also closed the Fort Steele rest area in April for ongoing maintenance on the water system, which was due for an overhaul. The work is expected to continue over next few weeks.

Although the two rest areas are closed, WYDOT has five others along I-80 that are open. They are Pine Bluffs, Summit (9 miles east of Laramie), Bitter Creek (41 miles east of Rock Springs), Lyman (36 miles east of Evanston) and Bear River (1 mile east of Evanston).

The two rest areas nearest to the closed rest areas are the Summit to the east and Bitter Creek to the west.
